poplar turned table legs

I've been using maple for table leg turnings. It's a little pricey and wood like to use poplar about half price. Any reason why not to use poplar for turning farm table legs.

In use they will dent very easily.

Poplar can be fuzzy and take a lot more prep for paint grade finish. Stain finishing takes more effort as poplar can have green and purple streaks. No idea what maple you are using. Try soft maple if you are using hard maple.

not worried about dings or dents it's suppose to look rough. Poplar paints good with a little prep. Thanks for your responses.

Poplar will work just fine. It will turn and sand easier than maple. Once painted you won't know the difference. In my opinion it is plenty durable. I can think of nothing better for this type of work. If you can find stock that is that is all or mostly green heartwood, that is better yet.
The legs in the photo were laminated 2 pieces of 8/4 poplar.

Poplar splits very easily. It is also soft as was mentioned. Soft Maple is twice the wood and not that expensive
