Oak pores more pronounced
11/2/16
I have a project in 1/4 sawn white oak veneer where the client wants the pores of the oak to remain open or be more pronounced.
I thought not a problem, oak is perfect or this! Well after staining and 2 coats of CV I'm not getting the look they are after.
I have tried light and heavy coats of CV with no real difference. Any suggestions?

wire brush.
or lacquer.
or reduce the cv heavily.

this is what wirebrushing does. It can be less dramatic or more, depending on how you want it.

The solids content of CV is too high and it fills the pores more than you want. One finish that will provide an open pore effect is catalyzed vinyl - it is durable, but thin. I'm attaching a data sheet for one product that will do the job.

Kevin - That's a nice look. Are you using a brush by hand, wire wheel on a drill, or panel machine? Do you dampen the wood first?

Kevin & Paul, between the wire brush and the catalyzed vinyl my samples turn out perfect, thank you so much.

Paul - we have a Supermax superbrush 49. It does full size panels. We dont wet the wood unless we need it to have a "torn out" weathered look. Running them dry gives you a nice even cut thats more controllable
