compatibility question

I have a repeat customer that i built some custom cabinet's for and he has asked me to refinish a table top that was made for him some time ago. He thinks that it was lacquer that was used but i really need to know for sure. I use only precat lacquer, so how do i test the old finish for compatibility? I am going to look at the piece in a few days and would like to be able to tell them the potential problems or do a test on site if possible. Rubbing it with a little lacquer thinner maybe? Don’t know if this works on all lacquers.
What won’t a precat lacquer stick to?
Maybe the whole thing needs to be striped down to bare wood but i have a feeling it was a plywood top so maybe dealing with a veneer.
Any thoughts?

I always rub acetone on the existing finish to see if the new material will melt into it. If the old finish does not get tacky, then it's catalyzed and will need to be scuff sanded to provide a mechanical adhesion. I recommend testing for contaminants such as furniture polish by spraying some mineral spirits from a common spray bottle and looking for fish eyes which if you haven't seen before look like mixing oil with water. If you do see this then only bid the project as time plus materials.

Even if you're not sure usually a coat of vinyl sealer or 2k isolante will seal it well enough to topcoat with precat lacquer or CV. Just be sure to completely clean the surface to remove any possible silicone contamination or you will be fighting fish eyes.

Is this true?
Can I spray conversion varnish over
lacquer if I put vinyl sealer on it first?
I really need to be able to do this.

Its not the ideal system but it will work for those crazy jobs we have to do sometimes. Just do some adhesion samples to be sure it will work on your project.
