5/8 particle bd cutter

Okay....been running Georgia pacific ultra-cab 5/8 particle board for years without a problem, using an Onsrud 1/2 compression diamond bit. In the last 4 months I have had issues with the bits chipping, apparently from hitting something in the material. We have noticed a change in the material which seems a little coarser in the middle than it used to be. Was always averaging about 150-200 sheets before having to change cutter, but now its more like 50-60 before it needs changing. What bits are others using and what type of life expectancy are you getting??

It could be a difference in the board, but I think it's not likely to make that dramatic of a difference. If you have not already done so, I would look to see if there has been an inadvertent change in your programming set up regarding feed rate or spindle rotation rate. Even a deliberate change to say improve cut quality with unintended consequences. A slowing of the feed rate or a speeding up of the spindle rotation could easily result in this kind of yield loss, all it would take is 15% on either one to bake these bits much quicker.
If you save your programs, can you look back at the raw code and see if you were spinning at the same rate 6 months ago compared to a recent program?

No change in any programming or feed rates. I really believe this is a cutter issue. I am looking for any other options for cutters as the cost for the diamond bits is steep if the continue to chip like this.

Have you tried the diamond coated compression bits or just the PCD diamond bits? I agree there is definitely more stuff (usually glue) in the boards today vs yesterday.

Been using the PCD bits for 10 yrs, never tried anything else....do you have a suggestion? we use a lot of southeast tooling for other aspects....don't know about diamond coated.

I would start actually where Ken said and start ruling out that anything has changed on Feeds and Speeds. Then I would change the collet if it has not been changed in the last 6 months. Then I would go to board mfg company and express you concerns with them also.

Chuck, did all that, no change in feed or rates as I do all the programming, collet was changed for new twice in hopes that was it....we have talked to our sales rep about material change....but that probably wont do much as our volume is on the order of 100 units a yr.
Hoping someone had another type cutter they had good luck with that I could try...

Ken,
At that point I would try another mfg diamond bit to rule out the bit. We can help you with that if you would like to try one of ours.

Chuck, thanks, already have my supplier getting me info on a bit from you to try. Cant hurt!
