Edge banding.

I’m a carpenter but not a cabinet maker. I’m going to make cabinets for my house and garage, European design with doors, I’m also an excellent painter with numerous sprayers including air assist gracos. Now my question is. In the doors what material should I use. I’m going to spray everything with water base lacquer. Now the local cabinet shop says they edge bandi everything they spray. So what type of material should I use for flat panel doors and what type of edge banding should I use that will hold lacquer well? I have an edge Bander machine.

We make a ton of one piece mdf doors in various profiles for paint grade. We do not edgeband them at all. We do however, only use solvent based CV for pigmented.

If your going with paint and want some grain showing through to match your face material just run raw (unfinished) banding in the same species as your face material. That would be the only time to be concerned with what banding under paint. If your going to burry all the wood grain use a pre-finished banding and it will save you a bit on the priming/scuffing. Your just going to burry it under pigment anyway. At least it will make your edge finishing easier.
