Sealing over an Artist's Acrylic Paint
Advice on clear-coating furniture after it has been hand painted with art paint. October 19, 2013
Question (WOODWEB Member) :
So, we are manufacturing and selling 80 children's chairs that are cut from Baltic birch plywood. Most of the chairs will be dyed to one of four colors and top coated with ML Campbell Magna Lac. We have been requested to allow an artist to paint an unfinished chair with the acrylic paint that is normally used for canvas paintings and topcoat it with some clear finish. Would vinyl sealer bond to this artist acrylic paint and create a base for the magna lac we are already spraying?
From contributor J:
Since you are already using MLC's products you could use Aqualente, Valspar Zenith CV waterborne lacquer, or any waterborne coating.
From the original questioner:
I have some agualente so that should be able to be sprayed directly over the paint without any sealer in between.
From Contributor S:
You will want to use a water white finish for the top coat, otherwise you will be changing the artist colors with an amber tint.
From contributor R:
Given the fact that they're for children I think using a LEED certified coating makes a lot of sense. In fact, I've done a lot of work that went to children’s hospitals where they were very particular as you could imagine. Most waterbornes these days are compliant. Don't spray it too thick or it will have a blue shade.
