Is caulk an acceptable filler?

We are a small furniture manufacturer. We are not currently using caulk in our paint prep process because my manager in the area does not like it. I know it will save us time on those long straight fills such as bed mouldings. Does anyone or everyone use caulk, and if so, what is the best type? We paint with waterborne latex.
What do you use in the fills? Yes, you can use caulk, and it's preferable in places where expansion and contraction are common. Polyseamseal makes a good quality paintable caulk; there are also many others.
We use a product called Extend HD, a thermoplastic sealant. It dries extremely fast and is permanently elastic. It's also paintable, with excellent adhesion. Manufactured by OSI Sealants.
