Find Replacement For A Butler Hinge

04/10/2015

From original questioner:

Hoping someone knows a source for this hinge. This is on a friends desk in their home, and is what allows a keyboard pullout front to drop down to use the keyboard.

My friend said that when the desk was new, this front would drop down to allow you to use the keyboard, then when you folded the front back up, it would lock into place.

Apparently there was a detente somewhere in the hinge that has worn out, so now it will not stay in the up or closed position, so I'm hoping someone knows where we might find 2 of these hinges.

Bob,

This is called a "Flap" hinge. It also goes by the name of "Butler" hinge and "sewing machine" hinge. I don't believe the lock-up feature you refer to was ever in the hinge itself.

More than likely, this lock-up feature is in the drawer slides that pull the keyboard shelf in and out.
Take a look at the slides. You may find your problem is here. There are dozens of slides for this purpose on the market.

Do a Google search for "Drop front keyboard slides" and you should find your answer.
