Shop Built Linear Microadjuster

Listing #54   Listed on: 08/31/2011

This is a shop made linear microadjuster that works very nicely. It is creamy smooth, absolutely no backlash and moves in a perfect straight line. The dial indicator allows adjustments in fractions of a thousandth of an inch.

The ground round rod rides on 4 ball bearings which provides the linearity. A small steel rod provides the movement. All bolts are 1/4-20 from the hardware store. Any stable wood will do for construction. The knob is a cap from a garden hose.

The first image below shows the 3/4" ground round bar rolls on four ball bearings. Impetus is provided by a 1/4" round bar at a right angle on top. Friction between the two pieces of steel is more than sufficient to overcome the friction of moving the positioner. The tightness of the adjuster is controlled by the 4 bolts on top. The yellow knob is a plastic cap from a garden hose.

One full turn of the 1/4" rod moves the adjuster pi*D, or 0.7854".
