Thickness Planer Tuning Tool

This is a simple tool I designed and made for tuning up an old Oliver 24”planer in the pattern shop I was working in. As the years have gone by, I’ve had use this tool on many different brands of planers. And as anyone who has done this will attest, it is very time consuming getting the different parts right. Here is a brief description for using this tool. First, make sure the power is turned off! Next, set the blades to the cutter head going by the mfg spec. The photo below shows how the tool is setup.

See figure #1

Now for machines with a carbide head, this step is eliminated. I turn the indicator facing up and using the lower table as a fine adjustment I check that the cutter blade/ carbide are parallel with the lower table. If all is good I set the in-feed roller, pressure bar and out-feed roller to mfg spec.

See figure #2

With the top adjusted I turn to the roller on the lower table by turning the indicator back facing down.

See figure #3

Hope you have found this informative and happy woodworking.

The "legs" look like they're steel? And the brace between them brass?

I'm wondering if a guy could make the same sort of rig using wood supports ... nice rig, BTW - thanks for sharing

Bill,
The legs are cast aluminum and the rods are brass. As for wood plywood may work better. Thank for your comments Tom
