I see in the back ground you have a 600A resaw. I have three (3) inch stellite blades that fit that model. I used to have one.

I have had that saw 20 years - use it to saw out blanks, with a 3/4" wide blade. Gave up on wide stellite blades and resawing - those are some darned expensive blades.
I had to replace the motor on that, too. The little spur gear on the end of the armature on the original motor got stripped - Hitachi stopped making that saw in 1984, so needless to say, no replacement parts were available.
What type motor do you use to drive the lathe? Does it operate at different speeds and if so how? I've always wanted to build my own equipment but I don't have much knowledge about motors, gear ratios, or electrical stuff.
I bought a good Baldor 1.5 hp TEFC motor at the local electric motor shop. The motor has a 1.5" pulley on it and while I can use different size pulleys on the lathe spindle, I generally stick with the 9" pulley, except for really large bowls.
A little math, some basic facts about motors and some idea of what kind of speed you want at the blade or workpiece will help you figure out what pulleys to use and which motor to select.
Thanks Turnus. At the cost of sounding lazy, at what speed does your lathe turn? And on a side note, I saw something really cool on an episode of the Woodwright's shop. These two guys at a window sash factory running all their equipment off a centralized belt system from the 1850s. Ran everything but the gas lamps.
Nice lathe. . Looks very strong. I also saw that episode on the WR's shop. And I knew what the sound of the breaking belt was! There was an old shop like that near me & I was there when a belt went. It's much louder when you are there!
