Schilkensen's Woodworking Inc.
Listing #1026 Listed on: 03/19/2010
I needed custom carriage house doors, and that was how this started. Went on to making matching entries and all the associative millwork needed. Now we do virtually any type of woodworking that the customers require. I have learned to do radiused work pretty well and efficiently, also to replicate virtually any trim set needed. Also, we are a supplier of radiused weather-stripping, radiused jambs and casings. To several lumber yards and door dealers. All of this is stain-grade work. We have also done some very nice pieces for a temple, a Bimah, Mehitza walls, and privacy walls.

Can does Leo show us where the cash is? Oh, wait. . . Self-employed = no cash. . . Hmm Nice shop, 4 shapers? Are some of them dedicated? Do you have enough clamps?

Yep, no cash :) It goes out as fast as it comes in. Sometimes faster. Yes, 1 shaper (2hp) is dedicated to 1/8" round overs since I do a lot of them. And no, I do NOT have enough clamps, since a bunch of them are from 7' to 10' I can't use them for glue ups. No readily anyway. I went to a stair shop in Pittsburg, he had over 1,000 clamps. It wasn't enough. I do have some tricks for when I'm short though. Just like everyone else I improvise.

Nice bimah (a special podium used in synagogues). Do you do your own finishing or do you outsource it? Do you do any onsite finishing?

Ever worked with black locust? I have a bunch of it, more than I could ever use. Brian

My finishing is outsourced for the most part. If it's just a swedish oil, or a clear finish, then I'll do it. Otherwise, since the fire marshalls visit regularly & I don't want a spray booth, I send it out. Also. . . . I don't have the skill level I need. (lousy results)

Nice shop, looks like you're busy, I like the Bihma, now I know what they are supposed to look like. Is that Sapele? How does it seperate into 2? Do you build a lot of them? Don

Good Bob, I liked your work Why you did them so cheap? Ny long island I can imagine how hard it is to keep business. other states don't pay taxes like you pay, and all the regulations.

Well, I'm back. Was away for awhile. Anyhow, I do some of the jobs for less than I would like since there are dead times in this business. I still make a few bucks, and I pay my bills. As to the taxes around here, yes, they are too much. The upside is that once the economy comes back I'll be getting my numbers again, which actually seems to be now. I just booked several jobs for my standard pricing, not the mid-winter discount prices! I'm sure that when the work dries up I'll drop the prices again, then back up, back down. Also, how many other states are there where people pay $4,000.00 to $7,500.00 each for garage doors on a regular basis? Please let me know.

Stay in business! You are on our list of woodworkers to call. We need nice, custom garage doors like the beautiful ones in your pics.

Do you ship your doors? I am converting my garage into an entertainment room and I need 2 sets of swing out carriage doors each opening is 9 x 7.
