The buffet is roughly 5' long and about 36" high and is veneered in lightly curly Koa with Cherry framework.
The buffet interior and drawers are all in Maple. the fronts are bent laminations done over a form and veneered after being fitted to the cabinet.
The second drawer down features a lift out silverware tray with a second level of storage below. It would have been better in the top drawer but there wasn't enough depth to get both levels.
The buffet top features a Mother of Pearl and Ebony inlay that is a variation on other inlays done in nearby pieces. This one has Ebony lines on either side of a strip of Mother of Pearl. For anyone interested I inlayed the ebony lines first to the full width of the groove then came back and routed in the mother of pearl down the center.
The marquetry on these pieces is done in all natural wood tones without any dyed veneers. The idea was to keep the tones more subdued and let the butterflies and dragonflies be the vibrant colors. The butterfly is done in white Mother of Pearl and a blue reconstituted stone. The dragonflies are a mix of Mother of Pearl, Abalone, reconstituted stone and wood. All were done as inlays after the veneering was complete.
The matching china cabinet is roughly 6' tall by 32" wide and about 18" deep.
The drawers and interior areas are once again done in Maple and there are two removable Cherry plate racks in the upper cabinet. The transition from lower cabinet to upper was an interesting challenge. I think it worked out well but this piece in particular looks much nicer in person than in the photos. The curved front is barely visible in the pictures but becomes much more apparent when seen close up.
The marquetry on the china cabinet was designed to be more subtle than that on the buffet so there are fewer flowers and they are much smaller. The flowers wrap around the right side of the cabinet. As it is placed in the room you walk by the right side of the china cabinet and the left side of the buffet so the flowers are fully visible on both pieces. The butterflies on this piece are Mother of Pearl, silver and blue reconstituted stone for the blue one and a mix of several types of reconstituted stone and Ebony for the green one. There is also a dragonfly in Mother of Pearl and wood on the far left.
Just a closeup shot of the green butterfly. this image is about 2.5 times full size.
