Great project. Love the portals and the colors are great too. You may be able to add something rustic or boat related in place of the chrome clasp on the barn doors.

Hi Mike. Thank you for the kind words. The 'chrome' clasps are actually galvanized steel that will discolor very quickly in Nova Scotia's humid, salty air and become more stealthy as they age. The owners of the boathouse did not like any of the 'barn' hardware that is available and these were chosen for their utility.

The steel will react with the tannins in the wood and the natural acids in the rain water and will stain the wood black. This stain penetrates deeply, and cannot be removed. Intense maintenance - even more so in that environment - can slow the process, but it will eventually win.

Water, vinegar and steel filings is the recipe for the stain if you want to ebonize any tannin containing wood - W Oak, Cherry, Mahogany, W R Cedar, etc. The stain will penetrate well over 1/16" into the wood.

Hi Kilgore. Thank you for your concerns re; the door locks. First off; locks are on the inside of the boat house...no direct exposure to the elements. Second point is; All of the metal hardware is isolated from direct contact with the marine varnished doors/shutters by adding thin shims or wood blocks....NO DIRECT CONTACT WITH FINISHED SURFACES.I hope this is satisfactory for you.
