Solar Kiln Question
7/11/15
I'm thinking about building a solar kiln in the 12' by 4' or 5' size range. I have several double pane windows in good shape that were taken out of a window replacement job. My question is, would these windows be suitable to frame in to use in the solar collector? My thinking is that they would hold the heat in better than the plastic panels I've seen used but my concern is I know some double pane windows are used to reduce the heat gain in a home. Any thoughts on using double pane windows in the solar collector?

Built a solar kiln about 6-8 years ago.. Used double pane insulated glass from entrance doors (same as windows except taller)..
Works great.. Use the windows, much better than single glass or fiberglass..

Glass can be the best covering material. Vandals and hail can be an issue. Avoid glass thT is not clear or has reflective films.

The windows to reduce heat gain are sometimes called "low e" windows, which means "low emissivity." This means that they do not transmit infrared energy. This are ok for a solar kiln.

Building on what Gene said about vandals or hail, there's also a good chance of putting a board through it. A kiln the size you're talking about, it would be easy to replace the windows with plastic if they don't work out. Looking forward to seeing some photos!
